kids Fractions
April 6, 2007 at 1:05 AM Time: how in the world do you explain time to a child? "We'll be there in 20 minutes." was always the typical answer till we realized that 20 minutes meant about as much as 20 moonpies. so we've come up with other ways to explain this idea of time, "count to 60...now count to 60 again...and again...and again." we finally just broke down and tried to explain fractions. "if we're there in 15 minutes that means it's one quarter of one hour. so if you split a pie into 4 pieces, it would be like just 1 of those pieces.
convo to illustrate the understanding of this point:
E: how long till we get to the aquarium?
J: about half and hour
E: oh, i 'emember. so we just have to break up a pie, and then we'll be there!
mmmmmm...pie...mmmmmm (thank you homer!)
