celebrations,
just me,
kids
November 20, 2007 at 11:58 PM for family night last night we broke out the gingerbread kits. i'd love to say that i was uber-domestic and made my own gingerbread and icing, but alas... they were walmart specials. i, being the deprived child that i am, have NEVER decorated a gingerbread house. never. so believe me when i say that i couldn't contain my glee.
in the hubs's family, they take their gingerbreading serious. this was his sisters house. it took her three hours. ain't it cute? my kids and i took one hour on our masterpiece.
i was just so darn proud of my kids. nothing against the perfect walkway, her initials cutely *peed* into the *snow* with yellow sprinkles, or the OCD color coordination of the above pictured house; i just LUFFED watching my kids plunk their brightly colored candies haphazardly into the delectable icing. i loved watching G not just lick each piece of candy before placing it, but giving it a full spit-bath and then sticking it somewhere on the house or tree. i got so much joy out of squeezing icing on to this little house willy nilly and then watching as our ornamentation slowly.slowly.slowly slid southward.
by the end of the evening we had all absorbed enough sugar through our skin to get us through to thanksgiving. oh, what a sticky, joyful mess it was.

ok, so it's 1:30 in the morning and my phone rings, surprising me quite a bit. the following convo insues:
me:hello?
him: um, who is this? (in a pre-pubescent voice)
me:i'm quite sure you've got the wrong number
click
2 minutes go by and the phone rings AGAIN!
me: i'm quite sure you have the wrong number.
him:i'm afraid we've gotten off on the wrong foot. (said quite suavely i may add)
me:no... i'm quite sure you've got the wrong number, (feeling badly for the poor kid) who are you trying to get ahold of?
him: well, hold on (whispering to buddies) i'm looking for megan.
me:yes, you officially have the wrong number
him: well, what's your name?
me: jenica, and how old are you?
him: twelve
me: i think you need to go to bed.
him: na-uh i'm a big boy!
me: um, when you start paying rent you can stay up until 1:30 in the morning on a tuesday.
him: well, how old are you?
me: 25
him: OH! um...
me: i think it's time for you boys to go to bed. good night little friend
click
so if any of you want to crank call a 12 year old boy, just call and say you're megan.

HILARIOUS! That pee in the snow thing has me with laughing tears rolling down my face.
i love crank callers! (except not at 1:30 in the morning)
so precious that you have this family time together. you're all going to remember these wonderful times in the years ahead.
happy thanksgiving!!
Love doing those gingerbread houses! Ours always look so unlike the box samples.
As the mother of a future 12 year old girl, let me say that if any boys come calling on her cell at 1:30, I'll be getting dressed, going to their homes, and waking their parents. Harrumph!
We made gingerbread houses every year growing up! That's one of my favorite parts of the holidays! And I have to admit - I'm like your SIL - I have OCD when it comes to color coordinating the house. :/
Fun times! Did we ever prank call people? Haha. I don't remember. I DO remember sneaking out of my house and walking all the way to Emily's in the middle of the night! Hahaha.
those gingerbread houses are fabulous!! and um ... as the mother of a 13 year old son, ack!! i sure hope he's not making crank calls!! eep ...
ohhh i love gingerbread houses!
it is not possible to make one without having a tummy ache afterwards.
(however i was never that clever with yellow sprinkles!)
you probaby made that 12 year olds night.

"i loved watching G not just lick each piece of candy before placing it, but giving it a full spit-bath and then sticking it somewhere on the house or tree"
Which is probably why my mom never let us eat our Gingerbread House.
This looks like so much fun! Happy Thanksgiving
I loved your gingerbread house! It is adorable. Good for you to put in all that work for you and your kids. I don't think I've mustered up the energy since we moved out here! Do you remember when we crank called our friends. Except I'm pretty sure it wasn't 1:30, it was probably more like 11:00. But I think Jonanne still rolled her eyes at us!;)
